An honest Booking Marshal review, and when Malvavisco fits instead.
Looking for a Booking Marshal alternative? Start with what Booking Marshal does well and what it costs, taken from its own pages. Booking Marshal is a reservation system for dude ranches, hunting lodges and seasonal operations, co-designed with a family-run Wyoming dude ranch. Malvavisco is built around running the stay: rides with a wrangler and the horses they need, the kitchen, the bar and the bill, in English, Spanish or Portuguese. We wrote this page, and we say when Booking Marshal is the better choice.
What is the best Booking Marshal alternative?
It depends on what you want to change. Booking Marshal is built for guest ranches that sell set weeks by season, with child rates, rider forms and waivers, at a published monthly price; if that describes your ranch, staying is usually right. To take bookings and payments online or sell through online travel agents, look at The Flybook, GraceSoft or ReservationKey. To schedule each ride with a wrangler and the horses it needs, plan included meals and keep the saloon on the family’s bill, in English, Spanish or Portuguese, try Malvavisco.
What Booking Marshal does well
From Booking Marshal’s own website, checked on 23 October 2026.
Booking Marshal describes itself as a complete booking system for dude ranches, hunting lodges and seasonal hospitality operations, “from reservation to checkout”.
- Built with a ranch. Co-designed with the Halmay family of Lazy L&B Ranch, a dude ranch in Dubois, Wyoming, and built by Awaken Solutions, a development firm outside Montreal working since 2001 (source).
- Weeks by season. You set each season’s start date, number of weeks and check-in and check-out days. Guests request a week on a mobile-friendly form with adults, youth and children, without creating an account, and staff turn a request into a booking with one click (source).
- Rider forms and waivers. In a guest portal, each guest can fill in a rider form (height, weight, Western and English riding experience, fitness and health) and sign a liability waiver with a timestamp and IP capture. Guests also see their invoice, deposit and balance, and can request boots in their size (source).
- Wrangler views. A wrangler week view with each guest’s riding experience, height, weight and health, a toggle to hide private details, and fields for the assigned horse and saddle number. A printable staff view lists guests by cabin with ages, health notes and special requests (source).
- Ranch rates and taxes. Adult and child daily rates per season, discounts and extra charges, sales and lodging tax, state revenue allocations across lodging, food, horses and activities, a surcharge, three suggested gratuities, and invoices with the tax breakdown (source).
- Guest emails and returning guests. Email templates with variables and reusable text blocks; returning guests are recognized by their email address, and each request records how the guest found you (source).
- A public demo. A live demo ranch you can open as a guest or an admin without signing up; its data resets nightly (source).

When to choose each
Stay with Booking Marshal, or choose it, if…
- You sell set weeks by season, and child rates matter
- Riders should fill in their own rider forms and sign waivers before they arrive
- Your wranglers match riders to horses from height, weight and experience
- You need lodging, food, horse and activity allocations for your state’s revenue department
- You want a published monthly price and a public demo before you talk to anyone
Choose Malvavisco if…
- You want each ride scheduled with a wrangler and specific horses, with overlap checks, not only recorded on a form
- Meals are included and the kitchen needs daily counts and dietary needs
- The saloon, the bar or the gift shop should land on the family’s bill, with stock counts
- Your crew works in Spanish, or in Spanish and English
- Stays vary in length, or you also run fishing, hunting or other guided days
- You bill in pesos, reais or other currencies and want each one reported on its own
What Booking Marshal’s pages don’t cover
We found no channel manager, card processing, store or bar, kitchen tools, or interface languages other than English on its site. Guests send requests that staff confirm, so they can’t book a week instantly. If any of that matters, ask Booking Marshal during its demo. For a wider field, see the best guest ranch software comparison, our roommaster comparison, or how Malvavisco runs a guest ranch.
Booking Marshal reviews and alternatives
For a family guest ranch that sells set weeks, its own pages make a good case: weeks by season, adult and child rates, rider forms and waivers in a guest portal, a wrangler view, state tax allocations and a published price. It fits less well if guests must book and pay online, if you sell on Airbnb or Booking.com, or if your team needs Spanish; its site doesn’t mention those.
$300 a month at launch pricing, which it calls half the long-term rate of $600. Migrating your data costs $500 at launch ($1,000 long-term), and the onboarding fee is waived if you start fresh. It says everything is included, with no add-ons.
For running the ranch week, yes: cabins, rides scheduled with a wrangler and the horses they need, included meals, the saloon and shop on the bill, deposits and reports, in English, Spanish or Portuguese. It doesn’t replace Booking Marshal’s rider forms, waivers, child rates or guest request form.
Yes, for free. Our team sets up your cabins, rates, rides, wranglers, horses and staff roles, enters every upcoming booking with its deposits, loads your guest list and rebuilds your emails. Rider forms, waivers and past bookings stay in Booking Marshal. Malvavisco’s subscription is quoted after a demo.
Its home page says it is built for dude ranches, hunting lodges and seasonal operations, but the features it describes (rider forms, wrangler views, weekly seasons) are written for guest ranches. For hunts with guides, see our hunting lodge software comparison.
